Parkinson’s Disease Statistics in Asia

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that has increasingly been on the rise in the Asian continent. Incidence and prevalence rates in Asia in 2021 were substantially higher than the world average, particularly in East Asia, at 24.16 and 243.46 per 100,000 population, respectively. Between 1990 and 2021, Asia experienced significant increases in PD measures: a 198.01% rise in incidence, a 284.35% rise in prevalence, a 111.27% rise in mortality, and a 144.45% rise in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).

Projections are that in 2050, East Asia will have the world’s largest number of PD cases at 10.9 million. This is largely because the region has an aging population, in which PD predominantly affects individuals above 65 years of age. Males are also at a persistently higher burden of PD compared to females, and the difference becomes wider with age.

In Central Asia, the PD burden is also caused by ecological issues such as exposure to air pollutants, heavy metals, and pesticides. There remains limited evidence of neurological disorders in the region, indicating the need for further epidemiological studies.

Overall, increasing trends in the incidence and prevalence of PD in Asia call for improved public health action, including more effective disease management and prevention strategies, as an intervention in reaction to this nascent public health concern.
Parkinson’s disease incidence in Africa is not well documented, largely due to limited healthcare data and diagnostic capability. The majority of studies estimate the Sub-Saharan African PD incidence from 7 per 100,000 in Ethiopia to 67 per 100,000 in Nigeria. The actual figure is likely higher due to underreporting and insufficient diagnostic capability.

The mean age of onset of PD among African populations is said to be around 69.4 years. With the rise in life expectancy on the continent, age-related diseases like PD are sure to increase.

Challenges facing accurate estimation and care for PD in Africa include:

Underdiagnosis and Misdiagnosis: There is a huge shortage of neurologists, with an average of 0.03 neurologists per 100,000 people in Africa and 4.84 per 100,000 in Europe. This leads to underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis of neurological disorders like PD.

Limited Treatment Access: PD medication is generally unavailable or unaffordable, particularly in rural areas. There are also insufficient well-trained health workers and multidisciplinary teams to perform full care.

Cultural Misconceptions: Symptoms of PD are misunderstood or explained in some societies by ways such as witchcraft, and medical consultation is delayed because of the stigma involved.

Looking ahead, projections indicate a dramatic rise in PD cases on the African continent. For instance, Western Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to see a 292% rise in PD cases by the year 2050, driven by an increasing aging population and rising life expectancy. \

It will require comprehensive approaches to tackle these problems, including boosting diagnostic capability, increasing the level of available low-cost treatments, training healthcare professionals, and enhancing public awareness in a bid to reduce stigma about PD.
