Bradykinesia in Parkinson’s Disease

Bradykinesia, or slowness of movement, is one of the primary motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It significantly impacts daily activities and is characterized by:

  1. Difficulty initiating movement: Tasks like standing up, walking, or starting to write may become delayed or challenging.
  2. Reduced movement amplitude: Movements become smaller, such as shorter steps while walking or smaller handwriting (micrographia).
  3. General slowness: Movements are slower, leading to reduced efficiency in performing everyday tasks.
  4. Impaired automatic movements: Actions that are normally automatic, like facial expressions or arm swings during walking, are diminished.
  5. Freezing episodes: Patients may experience moments where they feel “stuck” and are unable to move, especially when starting to walk or turning.

Bradykinesia tends to worsen as Parkinson’s progresses, affecting both fine motor tasks (e.g., buttoning a shirt) and gross motor tasks (e.g., walking). It often contributes to the overall reduction in mobility and independence.
